Awake & Sing!

Awake and Sing! featured at the Almeida Theatre from 31 August - 20 October 2007. This smash-hit Broadway show took New York by storm in 2006, winning Drama Desk Awards for Outstanding Revival of a Play, Scenic Design and Outstanding Ensemble Performance, and the Tony Award for Best Revival. Passionate and funny, Awake and Sing! beautifully captures the hopes and struggles in a frenetic family apartment in the Bronx.

Set in 1935 and in the Jewish Berger family home, Odets uses his personal experiences of poverty to question some of the fundamental tenets of American society. Through this turbulent comedy-drama we hear his ideas and philosophies and watch this family struggle to stay afloat. Dreams and disappointments, hopes and fears, encouraging words and bitter put-downs clash by day and by night as a stirring story of hope and idealism unfolds.
